16 Apply a water-based aniline dye to the tabletop. The color on this top is a mixture of 50 percent Golden Amber Maple and 50 percent Brown Walnut (mix the colors after they are in liquid form). After the stain is dry, sand the top with 400-grit wet/dry sandpaper to smooth the grain. Then, if using figured hardwood, apply a coat of boiled linseed oil. The oil will penetrate into the figured grain and highlight characteristics. After the oil has dried completely, apply a coat of shellac to seal the top. Sand the shellac with 400-grit sandpaper and apply two coats of precatalyzed lacquer using a high-volume-low-pressure (HVLP) spray gun.
